Over the years Mattel has asked many famous designers to create clothing for Barbie® Doll. These designers create one of a kind gowns and outfits for the rich and famous, celebrities and red carpet collections. Out of this are some of the most beautiful designs and dolls ever created. Below are a some of the Barbie® Doll designers and information about their first clothing designs.
• 1990 – Bob Mackie created Bob Mackie Gold Barbie® Doll in five thousand, hand-sewn golden sequins accented with a white feather boa. Her platinum hair is pulled up and accented by a golden headpiece with golden earrings and bracelets to complete the ensemble.
• 1994 – Nicole Miller created Savvy Shopper® Barbie® with a black velvet mini dress and Barbie® print overcoat. Barbie's accessories are a matching black purse and pumps. She carries a Bloomingdale’s shopping bag.
• 1995 – Christian Dior created a stunning gold, black and red metallic brocade gown for the Christian Dior Barbie®. Christian Dior Barbie® comes with a fitted jacket and matching full-length skirt. Gold toned beads and rhinestones accent the sleeves of the jacket. Barbie's hair is pulled back revealing golden leaf earrings.
• 1995 – Donna Karan (DKNY) created the Donna Karan Barbie® with a black mock turtleneck, black hose, sarong skirt, a beret and red, fringed shawl. Her accessories include a purse, black sunglasses and a Bloomingdale’s shopping bag.
• 1995 – Robert Best designed The Barbie Fashion Model Collection, Billions of Dreams Barbie®, Crystal Jubilee™ Barbie®, Millennium Bride™ Barbie®, the Model Of the Moment™ Collection just to name a few. Robert Best probably has more Barbie Doll designs than any other designer.
• 1996 – Ralph Lauren created the Ralph Lauren Barbie® Doll with a timeless feminine style outfit. Barbie® doll wears a double-breasted navy jacket of wool-blend with patch pockets. Embroidered Ralph Lauren emblem and gold-tone button detail on the sleeves and the front pf the jacket. She wears a navy knit turtleneck bodysuit, grey wool blend pants with cuffs and a double-breasted camel colored overcoat with a half belt in the back.
• 1996 – Calvin Klein created the Calvin Klein Barbie® with a real denim skirt with the authentic CK label with a grey crop top covered by a denim jacket. Barbie Doll sports a back pack, CK windbreaker with a Calvin Klein logo on the back, sneakers and a baseball cap. Her undies also sport the Calvin Klein logo.
• 1996 - Escada designed her Escada Barbie® with an exquisite European design featuring a fitted, black velvet bodice, surrounded by layers of pink silk shantung that creates a graceful cascade of fabric around this radiant Barbie doll. A Limited Edition doll, Escada Barbie® doll features long, rooted eyelashes, a stunning silk stole and long beaded earrings.
• 1997 – Anne Klein created the Anne Klein Barbie® Doll with smart, high-powered design for business daywear. Barbie® doll is wearing the black skirt and stockings, a white dickey, red knitted vest and a black hounds tooth jacket. The accessories include chain link gold toned necklace with link earrings, a black purse with the Anne Klein logo, black pumps and a black belt with a lion head buckle.
• 1997 – Byron Lars created “In The Limelight” Barbie ® Doll. Her deep brown chocolate velvety gown is accented with a metallic like cape lined in luscious lime color. Faux fur and strapped shoes complete the outfit. Barbie® doll is dynamic, sophisticated and completely unique.
• 1997 – Bill Blass created the Bill Blass Barbie® Doll with a gown just for Barbie®, lined completely in bright fuchsia and has a fuchsia underskirt for added fullness. Her unique hairstyle and face paint complete the couture styling along with its dramatic train and back.
• 1998 - Oscar de la Renta created the Oscar de la Renta® Barbie® Doll with a gown exclusively for Barbie® doll. A bodice of luxurious golden brocade is overlaid with chocolate colored lace and dazzled with sequins and beads. Elegant long lace sleeves ending in cuffs of faux fur cover her arms. This gown features an opulent full skirt of golden brocade revealing an underskirt of tulle with golden edging. A brown ribbon along with a golden and faux topaz brooch accents the waist. Chocolate brown lace shawl is draped around her arms.
• 1998 - Vera Wang's eye-catching bridal dresses and Vera Wang™ Barbie® Doll carries off the look of elegance. Each gown catches attention with stylish details. Velvety black piping, black bows, pearly buttons, add unique flair to the ivory, duchess silk satin gown with Vera Wang's signature sheer illusion netting on shoulders and sleeves. The finishing touches to this bridal ensemble are a bouquet of red roses, tulle underskirt, stockings and lace garter with bow.
• 1998 – Nolan Miller’s first design was the Nolan Miller Sheer Illusion® Barbie® Doll which is a slip-style gown of sheer black tulle, highlighted with a lacy trim on her long skirt. The full-length jacket is with a high collar of jet-black tulle. Barbie's hair is set in an upswept fashion and drop earrings she is set for an elegant evening.
• 1999 – Todd Oldham gives the Todd Oldham Barbie® Doll a full-length leopard-print coat with an aqua satin lining and a golden satin hip-hugger mini skirt with turquoise and brown embroidery. It's also has a sheer black t-shirt with coordinating decorative stripes. A barrette with three crystals in Barbie® doll's long loose auburn hair adds the special touch that is only Todd Oldham original.
• 2000 - Japanese fashion designer Hanae Mori designed the Hanae Mori Barbie® doll is an international haute couture masterpiece, Hanae Mori Barbie® wears a magnificent black lace dress embellished with golden woven accents, pink taffeta butterflies, and black satin ribbons. A long and luxurious pale pink taffeta stole completes her fabulous, truly elegant look. This amazing doll is a Limited Edition, and the very first Barbie® by this world-renowned designer.
• 2000 – Givenchy a world famous designer created a classic reproduction of a gown he originally designed in 1956. Known for upscale, elegant glamour, his sleek design features Barbie® in a slim-fitting, black evening gown with velvety straps and a black moiré panel. A jet-black faux fur stole with matching black moiré lining and long, black opera-length gloves accompanies the elegant design.
• 2001 – Burberry creates the Burberry Barbie® Doll that celebrates the proud tradition of the Burberry of London fashion label with an exciting new ensemble. With a tan, double-breasted trench coat, lined with signature Burberry plaid, setting the tone for a new approach to fashion. A long sleeve black jersey sweater is a dramatic contrast to the striking Burberry plaid kilt. The accessories include a matching plaid scarf with red reverse, plaid messenger bag and black shoes with spats.
• 2003 - Giorgio Armani designed the Armani Barbie® doll with wears a re-creation of an elegant original Giorgio Armani gown. Her strapless, silk chiffon top is paired with a skirt of crepe and sparkle tulle. Intricate beadwork lends sophisticated glamour to the long skirt. She carries an evening purse of taupe crepe embellished with crystals along with hematite earrings and necklace.
• 2004 – Versace is recognized around the world for luxury clothing and lifestyle accessories. Couture design, recognizable flair and unmistakable elegance are signatures of the Versace brand. Versace Barbie® doll wears an alluring sleeveless taupe gown with a long hip hugging bodice of laced taupe ribbon above ruffles of chiffon falling vertically to the floor creating a sumptuous sense of motion.
• 2004 - Paul Frank created two Barbie® dolls (one red and the other blue), and clad in Paul Frank pajamas with Julius the cheeky monkey. Ready to relax after a long day of shopping, Barbie® comes with a Paul Frank shopping bag plus all the doll’s miniature Paul Frank shopping goodies.
• 2004 – Kate Spade Barbie® doll wears a floral print coat with three-quarter length sleeves, belted at the waist. Beneath the coat is an ivory knit sweater and green shantung cigarette pants. A faux wicker handbag with golden detail is reminiscent of Kate's handbag designs, specifically the "Venice Basket." Barbie® also carries a canvas tote trimmed with faux green leather. The dog perched at the edge of the bag is modeled after Kate's friendly and loyal dog. Barbie® wears many accessories including bold beaded necklace and earring set with faux turquoise accents, oversized sunglasses, and green high-heel sandals.
• 2005 - Cynthia Rowley was seven years old when she designed her first dress. She was a senior in art school when she sold her first collection of eight pieces. Cynthia Rowley Barbie® wears a knee-length dress in light blue glitter dot print from the designer's spring collection with a long crème colored jacket. Accessories to complete the ensemble include a leather-like purse, Cynthia Rowley shopping bag, strapped heels, a cell phone and lipstick.
• 2005 - Lilly Pulitzer’s Barbie® doll and Stacie® doll by pay tribute to Lilly's bright and colorful design. Barbie® doll is wearing a long shift with the perfect, casual-but-chic accessories. They accessories are sunglasses, purse, scarf, and golden hoop earrings. Stacie® doll is adorable in a short shift and kerchief.
• 2005 - Judith Leiber® Barbie® is ready to take to the red carpet and capture all the glamour and prestige. The name Judith Leiber inspires a dazzling doll perfect for the spotlight or candlelight. The ensemble includes a strapless cocktail dress of taupe lace with a scalloped hem. Her full skirt and fitted corset are accented with tiny golden sequins. Accessories include a golden minaudiere accented with clear and light topaz-colored crystals and a Barbie® “B” logo, leaf motif earrings, and golden cuff bracelet with set-in crystals.
• 2005 – Juicy Couture is known as the women’s style. The duo of Pamela Skaist-Levy and Gela Nash-Taylor are responsible for the fashion revolution, which let women dress up as they are dressing down. The dolls wear the signature tracksuit pieces while carrying lots of accessories.
• 2006 - Anna Sui Boho’s Barbie® begins with a dainty white blouse with pink embroidered floral details and an empire waist. On top, there’s a black, crochet-look shawl straight out of the 1970s. She pairs straight-cut, denim-type trousers tucked into faux suede cowboy boots embellished with butterflies. The matching handbag and belt are perfect for the outfit, along with a Victorian-style cameo choker. The ensemble is completed with a pair of rose-hued rocker shades and a floppy pink hat trimmed with silvery studs. • 2006 - Dooney & Bourke Barbie® Doll wears a bohemian style ensemble with a tiered ombré pink skirt and cropped denim type jacket with prominent Dooney & Bourke emblems. The most important accessory is a signature Dooney & Bourke purse from their iconic "It" collection. This doll, inspired by the casual chic of Dooney & Bourke, wears hoop earrings, three bangle-style bracelets and a pink scarf in her long hair as final touches.
• 2006 - Badgley Mischka Barbie® Doll wears a beautiful halter gown of pink charmeuse, decorated with white lace, iridescent sequins, and beads. A pink charmeuse flower, worn on the bodice, delicate chiffon shawl, and glittering crystal earrings are the pitch-perfect accessories.
